Yes, it was a crap year, no doubt about.
We have lost so many artists and some of them were really dear to me. First and foremost David Roback who passed away in February. Mazzy Star was one of my all-time favoutite bands and it is a huge loss that still aches.
Harold Budd was an avant-guarde composer and a titan of minimal and ambient music. I'm not gonna lie, I only know him by his collaborations with Robin Guthrie and Cocteau Twins. But that is enough for me to love and respect his work and mourn the loss. Harold Budd became a part of the canon for any fan of Cocteau Twins and Dreampop. Every single morning for the past how many years, I wake up to "Sea, Swallow Me" from "The Moon and The Melodies" and every time I admire the music. Another of his brilliant works with Robin Guthrie was released this year shortly before his passing.
What more can I say about Florian Schneider that has not been said yet? I still believe that Kraftwerk was the greatest band ever at least in terms of the influence they had and still have to this day.
We have also lost Dave Greenfield, who was a huge part of the The Stranglers and their unique sound. Adam Schlesinger was a founding member of Ivy and also died this year of fucking Covid.
Have a listen of some of their music. It's worth the time to remember the artists.
