Podhale Nowy Targ - Hutnik Krakow (1-2)

III Liga
Stadion Miejski im. Pilsudskiego
November 16, 2019

If you have ever been to Zakopane, you most probably passed Nowy Targ on the way. It is a little town right at the foot of the Polish mountains where the buses stop for a quick piss-break. The town and the area is more famous for ski jumping and hockey. Nevertheless, Nowy Targ has its football team as well.

It’s very easy to get there from Krakow and the bus trip takes about an hour and a half. I chose Nowy
Targ because of the ease and proximity. Also, it was an early kickoff, so I could get home at a decent
hour. Mountains are so close that you can see them from everywhere. Unfortunately, it did not feel like being in the mountains due to the horrible air that plagues so many Polish towns. Apparently, people still warm their houses with coal, wood and God knows what. There are measures against this in Krakow, but those little towns and villages know nothing else and keep polluting the air.

As any other Polish town, Nowy Targ has its share of sights and interesting places. I especially enjoyed the quiet backyard of the huge Cathedral and a bridge above the small river. I also checked the local hockey rink. You can definitely feel that hockey and ski jumping are way more popular here than football. I will definitely go back to see a hockey game in Nowy Targ.

The small football ground is just a short walk from the bus station. It has a single stand and the
clubhouse is constructed with lots of wood to evoke the feeling of local wooden mountain huts. In
general it’s a nice little ground, sufficient for the team and its level.
I saw some graffiti around the arena. I also saw a few youngsters sporting unmistakable Polish fan-made shirts but Podhale did not have any organized support at the game. Hutnik had fans but it was hard to me to calculate them. Police and security were dispatched to the away sector at the end of the only stand to ensure the safety of the match. There were no incidents.

The only thing I vividly remember from the game is the ridiculous blunder of Podhale’s goalkeeper. It’s probably the worst mistake I’ve ever seen live. There was a high slowly and safely descending ball to the penalty area with nobody around. It looked like it was the easiest possible catch. I think the goalie could not decide between punching it away or just catching it so he kinda did both. As a result of this attempt, he put the ball straight into head of the only opposing player in the vicinity who could not believe his luck. Hutnik quickly scored another one but Podhale managed to get one back right before the end of the first half.

Nowy Targ is considered to be one of the coldest places in Poland and I was glad I had warm clothes on. It definitely felt colder than the advertised +11. Well, no wonder, as you can see how close the
mountains are and the ground is open to all sorts of wind. I had a tea with lemon and decided to stand
during the second half. Unfortunately, there was nothing special and the game ended 1-2 to the delight of the travelling support
