I Liga
Stadion Miejski, Bielsko-Biala
August 24, 2019
I tried to visit Bielsko-Biala several times, but decided to postpone my trip so that it coincides with a football game, preferably of their main team - TS Podbeskidzie. I've read a lot about the town and was quite intrigued.
Bielsko-Biala is just about 2 hours away from Krakow and is located at the foot of Beskidy mountain range. It turned out to be a really interesting and unusual. Reminded me of nearby Katowice, Vienna and even Quebec City. Unfortunately a lot of buildings are in disrepair and it feels that Bielsko-Biala does not have the wealth of Krakow. But I will encourage anyone to visit Bielsko-Biala is you happen to be in the area.
The stadium is a short walk from the city center. Just like with many other Polish stadiums, it was originally built as a soviet oval and then was recently reconstructed to appear in its current form. On one side, it's just very close to quiet residential street, but on the other side it faces a busy road and a huge parking lot. Inside the stadium territory, there is also a sports hall for futsal or volleyball. The stadium is owned by the city of Bielsko-Biala and is shared between Podbeskidzie and BKS Stal. A few months before the game, the stadium hosted U-20 WorldCup where Ukraine won.
I haven't really heard much about BKS Stal. In my mind, Podbeskidzie was always the first team and Rekord Bielsko-Biala was the second team. Stal has been playing lower leagues for quite a while now but it feels that it's definitely the biggest team in the city. Basically all the stickers and all the graffiti I saw, were about Stal. I think that's because Podbeskidzie is quite a recent team that was created as a merger of several other teams in the 90s.
I have mixed feelings about the arena inside. Maybe that's because it was mostly empty despite a warm sunny Saturday. Entrance fee was the same for any seat in the ground. As always, there was a small band of ultras and they deserve the utmost respect for supporting the team. They arranged the flags for the regular fans before the start of the game and conducted the makeshift choreo while the team made their entrance on the field. I don't remember much of the game but I was happy that Podbeskidzie won, making those few fans happy on that beautiful August day.
