It's been almost a year for me here in Krakow, but I still have not had a chance to see any gigs. Obviously you can't compare music scene here to Toronto but still, there are some interesting acts coming to Krakow once in a while. Finally, there was something I did not want to miss.
I really like Tamaryn. Her first couple of records hold a very special place in my heart. I saw her supporting The Raveonettes when she just started with her debut album. Unfortunately, her last two albums are ok at best. She tries so hard to be slightly darker 80s Madonna and new music does not really fit her vocal range. But still, I'm not gonna miss her gig if it's close. And, frankly, I was more interested in Cold Showers. I checked them just to get acquainted and I really loved their music. Yes, it's just another post-punk/coldwave band but it's done really well and those guys can really write great melodies. Their new record is super cool and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
The gig was a part of a small club-stage festival in Krakow. At first it was supposed to have a different venue but then it was moved to Betel Club right in the centre of the old town. Betel turned out to be just a small pub, also occupying a yard in front of it. And that's where they put a small stage. Apparently, when the weather does not permit outdoor stage, they install it inside, even though the space is super tiny.
Cold Showers opened the bill. The lead singer is a funny looking dude with awkward stage moves. It was super hot that night but he was still draped in everything black and wore Dr.Martens boots. Cold Showers had no drummer and a lot of parts were prerecorded, but even with this lineup of bass, guitar and vocals, I really enjoyed the set. It was mostly comprised of their new material with songs from their excellent second album "Matter of Choice". Just like on those records, the real standouts for me were "Faith", "Dismiss", "Whatever you Want" and "Ceasefire".
I don't really know what to tell about Tamaryn. She predictably did not perform anything of her gazy music, instead focusing on her last two synthy albums. But, to her credit, I must say that she definitely selected all the best songs. Overall she was way more energetic than the last time I saw her, but I guess it fits her new music. As with Cold Showers, there was no drummer, and even more music was prerecorded. Oh, and the sound for Tamaryn was very lousy and muddy.
